Alpinia galanga is a member of the ginger family and is more commonly known as galanga, greater galanga, and Siamese or Thai ginger. Various parts of the galanga plant are edible including the floral sprouts and flowers, its tender shoots, and most importantly, its rhizomes (underground stems). It is native to South and Southeast Asia and has been an important ingredient in both the cuisines and traditional medicine of those cultures since ancient times. The herb is a perennial and can grow upto 2m in height.
