Diplazium esculentum (vegetable fern) is an edible species of fern found in Asia and Oceania cultivated for its young fronds. It is considered one of the most important ferns in the world in terms of human consumption. In the Sultanate of Brunei, the fronds of the vegetable fern is dipped and allowed to ferment in a salty mixture of water and rice and then served uncooked as ‘budu pakis’. In Hawaii, it is used in salads named pohole.
